We have a Working Group assigned to look into traffic calming measures in East Stoke, including a community speed-watch initiative and the possible acquisition of traffic-calming hardware such as speed-reporting signs.
Charlie Falkingham is the appointed lead for the working group and the Parish Council liaison is Cllr Spencer Davies.

Update…
The Working Group reports that:
- We are awaiting confirmation of a date/time that a PCSO from Newark will carry out speed gun training for village residents.
- Approx. 15 residents have said they would be happy to take part in this initiative. East Stoke FB page was useful to gain interest.
- There has been an increased presence of both mobile speed van and police pulling cars over since the last Parish Council meeting.
The Working Group has asked the Parish Council to consider a proposal to buy two electronic, interactive speed signs at a cost of roughly £6,200.
September Update…
At the Parish Council meeting on 12 September 2023, it was agreed that the Parish Council would directly purchase the electronic, interactive speed signs mentioned above.
The next step is for the Working Group to identify the ideal locations for the signs and to apply for permission to site them there on public property.
Once certain the signs can be installed without objection from District or County Councils and siting permission is received the purchase will go ahead.
The signs will be battery powered so we’ll need volunteers to ensure they remain charged.
The cameras capture data which we’ll be able to use to support future traffic calming measure applications if the signs alone have insufficient effect, however data supplied by the sign manufacturers indicates that studies show approximately
a 25% reduction in top speed and average speed.
We’ll share data from the signs here so everyone will be able to see the actual effect they have.
January Update…
We’re in the process of completing some paperwork with Notts County Council, required before work starts and then we expect to be able to order the signs.
At the Parish Council meeting on 16 January 2024 we voted to approve the updated cost of the two interactive speed signs, including mounting poles, to be sited alongside Fosse Road in East Stoke.
February 2025 Update
After a frustrating exchange of emails in 2024, it was finally established that whilst Notts County Council had agreed verbally and issued draft contracts permitting us to install interactive speed signs funded by ourselves, their
policy is, in fact, that we can only have signs purchased and installed through themselves, which would have increased the cost several-fold.
Next, we requested speed monitoring equipment be installed by Notts County Council to determine whether traffic speed and volume justified the installation of interactive speed signs, or any other measures, at public expense.
The results, which came on 5 Feb 2025, were that traffic volumes were insufficient to justify such public expenditure.
The detailed results are:
AM Peak
Averaged in both directions, 160 vehicles per hour over a 7-day period; 131 vehicles per hour during peak morning times.
PM Peak
Averaged in both directions, 199 vehicles per hour over a 7-day period; 168 vehicles per hour during peak evening times.
The 85th percentile speeds of vehicles traffic in both directions was 41.5mph. Northbound was 41mph while South-westbound was 42mph.
A request is in place for two temporary interactive speed signs to be placed to confirm these results.
